Pool Waves

Pool Waves

Gazing through steamy window panes, I prepare myself for the onslaught of muddy feet, wet plastered hair and the necessary messiness that is..."draining the pool during Florida's dark, heavy storms".   The pool water is mischeviously licking the edge of our red pavers, now bright and slick with rain.  I am sure they are laughing as they certainly have me cornered, as my knight in shining armour is currently slaying dragons in the field while I'm tending to the homefront. The first time I was forced to master the art of pinching a cell phone to my ear, while balancing an umbrella and desperately fiddling with a clanky metal pool box with unintelligble switches inside and hooking up long blue tubes and cranking levers...well you could say I was a bit out of sorts.  Hardy was in the field again (lovingly slaying dragons) so I had to "step up" in those exterior, mechanical roles of Home CEO-ing that I tend to avoid.  Hardy's ever steady voice was guiding me through the process.  "Open the metal box.  Flip the switch labeled "filter" to the middle.  Now unroll the blue tube."  (At this point I drop the phone, cry out a few choice words, and we awkwardly recover).  "Ok, now turn the lever to the left...but slowly or else..."  At that point a huge gush of water expoded in my face.  "Uh, yeah, if you turn it on too quickly the water pressure can blow off the tube..."  Eventually we made it through. Thankfully, subsequent pool fixes have been much smoother.  Nowadays I ditch the umbrella and resign myself to face the inclement weather full on.  In times past, I'd admit I've been a prissy type, but I've gotten over my "eww, I don't want to get wet" nature, partially with age and partially aided by my messy-is-great coach, Sierra, the boisterious swimming chococlate lab who has been training me for a year on the art of aquatic fetch, which involves many a wet shake, wet body smudges and gooey tennis balls. (I must interject here that although I'm a pro now at draining the pool during raging storms, it's still a resigned, face-it-head-on-because-you-have to feeling.  It's reminiscent of that sinking feeling of knowing you're alone...and regrettably now responsible to respond...when a many-legged creature crawls out of nowhere, demanding immediate action to rightfully reclaim the house's bug-free state...) But back to the story.  Today's pool draining had an interesting ending.  After draining the pool, I came back in drenched, of course, and quickly changed into my deliciously comfy PJ-esque pink Juicy jumpsuit and proceeded to do an incredibly generic blow dry, followed by a flip of my hair into a damp and slighly tangled bun.  There my bun hung out, unassuming, while I went about my business hunting down dust bunnies under my daugther's bed and corralling Nerf Gun bullets back to their home in the "Nerf Stuff" basket. Evening fell and when I took down my hair, out sprang some perfect waves!  Now go figure at ten at night, with no effort at all, I have a great hair style!! Moral of the story: Bad hair days...expect them when you are most rushed.  Good hair days...expect them when you least expect them...like on a humid downpouring day.
Hey? If its this easy to get waves why do I always need my hot rollers?
