When you workout several times a week, you develop certain "go to" looks. For me, my essential "uniform" consists of tight black sports capris, a sports bra, a fitted one-colored tank top and my (always Asics) tennies. Here's how to get the look.
Let's start with the black sports pants. Since I wear black sports pants often - and you will likely as well - I always suggest looking for pairs with some kind of style. My favorite sports pants are hands-down my Hard Tail "peephole" pants. I splurged on these ($55-$60) but it was well worth it since they are worn several times a week and they are just plain unique and interesting. I get a lot of questions about where I bought them. I got them from Nordstrom. However, you can Google "Hard Tail" to find several other stores where these pants are available (I am not sure whether Nordstrom still carries them).
FYI, Hard Tail also sells black cotton "hot-pants", if you need to wear shorter bottoms to stay cool during your workouts. Cotton hot-pants are not only more comfortable, but are more "forgiving" than their spandex counterparts, so I definitely would recommend them. Other alternatives for workout shorts are Sophie gym shorts, which are inexpensive ($6 or $7 a pair) and come in every color under the sun. I indeed have a collection of these shorts, but due to modesty reasons I don't wear them when I do my fitness video blogs, but instead just don them for weekends at the house.
Now moving onto sports bras...mine are generally fairly simple and one-colored, with the exception of my Florida Gators one, which was love at first sight from the Victoria's Secret Pink Collegiate collection. (If you have an NFL, MLB or college team you follow, check out Pink's cute logo wear for these teams, as they have more style than what's sold in your average run-of-the-mill-blah sports stores. I'll usually only add in these fun / nonessential items once a year with my Santa-supplied gift certificates, which, incidentally, are generally to A) Abercrombie B) Victoria's Secret and C) Ann Taylor).
Over the years, I've collected several high quality sports bras in a variety of colors, so fortunately I haven't needed to buy any more. I have black, white, magenta, hot pink, blue and my cute orange UF Gators one. This amount is plenty for an active fitness gal who keeps up with the wash (any more would be over-indulgence). For someone starting out, even just two will do initially, but keep adding to your collection until you have enough to cover the week so you only have to do the wash once a week.
While my favorite sports bra has to be the hot pink one (I love the in-your-face girliness of the color paired with its simple, tailored and classy lines), I tend to wear my plain white cotton UnderArmour one most often. And while I don't need any more sports bras, I do have my eye on one that I can customize at www.GKelite.com...but that is a "want to have" as opposed to a "need to have" so I'll keep that on my mental "of interest" list and simply wait until the appropriate timing to get it. It's certainly not a must-have and I don't buy things frivolously.
Moving along, the next essential item for your fitness get-up is a fitted tank top, which you layer on top of your sports bra. I like Abercrombie's one-colored racer-back tank tops, which are always on sale for approximately $12 almost every time I shop there. For the last several years, they've continued to stock these, just in different colors every season, so you are sure to find them on the sales table. These are lightweight and will develop small tears after about a year and repeated washings but I feel they give an appropriate length of service (at least a year or two with repeated washings) and are the softest of all the tank tops I've tried.
Lastly, I just plain love Asics tennis shoes (or shall I say cross-trainers). These have always worked extremely well for me and last forever. Anything with pink is my go-to style.
Good luck with putting together your workout wardrobe! I find that it's best to look neat and presentable when working out. It just feels better. With a little effort, you'll have a cute outfit that will not only be comfortable and easy to put on (no ironing ever required for this workout outfit!), but something that will also get you into the "workout" frame of mind. Have fun!
