In this lesson plan (one of 45 weekly lesson plans I created for my daughter Lexi), you'll find a complete, organized, easy to read and easy to implement homeschool toddler / preschool age 2 & 3 (24-48 months) curriculum to teach with the theme SQUARES (Unit 2 Shapes).




Suggested Materials (Buy, Find, Substitute or Make)

  • Bulletin board / other cutouts (see below)
  • Weekly theme book selections
  • Weekly coloring pages
  • Sensory Letter Tubs (optional, nice to have)
  • Shapes bean bags
  • Montessori-inspired metal insets or shapes stencils (several options at the store link above)
  • Montssori pink tower or free pink tower printable here
  • Contact paper window craft: Clear contact paper roll, tissue paper of any color or colors, construction paper for borders

Suggested Cutouts

(Make these cutouts for your weekly themed “bulletin board” and other setups for the week. You’ll use these visual aids throughout the week. Find these on the web, print & laminate them and store them when not in use. See activity list for more explanations.)
  • “Today’s” date and “weather” labels
  • Etc (however many as you'd like for your bulletin board)
  • Squares of various sizes
  • Window
  • Sandwich
  • Gift box
  • Dice
  • Other printables shaped like a square

Our Circle Time Sequence

  • One song or fingerplay to quiet / focus the little one(s)
  • What is today? (date, weather labels) (For age two this is rather quick as they don't really understand this yet but still nice for routine's sake)
  • Today's message
  • Review one letter (usually using the letter tubs, a sandpaper letter, flashcard or similar)
  • Review one number (count to it)
  • Songs - a few for funStory time - using the week's theme selections

Daily Messages

  • A square has four sides.
  • A square has four corners.
  • This [object] is shaped like a square.

  • Making Shapes, A Popup Book, James Diaz
  • Peanut Butter and Jelly, A Play Rhyme

Song & Group Time


Language Bin

  • Letters sensory tubs (choose the next few letters to work on)
  • Montessori metal insets (practice drawing squares as well as circles from the previous week). This activity helps with fine motor skills for writing eventually. You can use either the more expensive metal insets that will cost around $50-60 or you can use plastic insets. Both options are available at the store links above and below.

Sensorial

  • Sensorial Bin 1: Geometric solids (see store)
  • Sensorial Bin 2: Playdoh and shapes cookie cutters
  • Theme Shelf: Shapes bean bags, Montessori Pink Tower, anything else from the house square shaped like play food boxes, cube shaped blocks, etc

Art


Practical Life

  • Practical Life Bin: Folding cloths exercise (either purchase the Montessori ones with the folding lines or simply introduce the exercise with five or so cloths). (see details in the printable PDF version).
  • Cooking: Cheese and crackers in square shapes

Math

  • Math Bin: Start working on the next ten numbers (11-20) if your child is ready or start introducing 1-10 in Spanish.

Select 3-4 activities "out and about" each week.
